Our Vision & Mission

bri

Our Vision: A community where children are inspired to learn, encouraged to explore, and empowered to achieve their fullest potential.

Our Mission: We provide high-quality, comprehensive early childhood education programs and support services to empower children and their families, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Overview: In 1973, Main Street was founded to serve children, ages 2 to 5, from predominantly low-income families.

Each year, we serve 150 children – 125 preschool students (ages 2 to 5) and 25 elementary school students (ages 6 to 10) –  who receive critical early learning services that ensure they are prepared for success in kindergarten and help their parents to maintain full-time employment. In Fairfax County, childcare costs can easily exceed 30% of total family income. Programs that are both high-quality and affordable – such as Main Street – are scarce.

Of the children enrolled in our preschool:

  • 78 percent come from low-income families;
  • 69 percent speak a language other than English at home; and
  • 61 percent live in households led by single parents.

Main Street is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a distinction held by less than 10 percent of childcare centers nationwide. We are a partner of the Virginia Preschool Initiative and maintain a 4-star rating from the Virginia Star Quality Initiative. We also the Combined Federal (#31872) and the United Way (#8262) campaigns.

Main Street welcomes all preschool children and families regardless of race, religion, culture, national origin, gender, family background or economic status.
