Reading is Fundamental Program


Since 1966, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) has been helping children discover the magic of reading. Through a network of 435,000 volunteers at 23,000 sites across the nation, RIF annually provides 16 million new, free books and reading motivation services to 5 million children and their families. What is RIF?
  • A book distribution program designed to promote a life-long love of reading.
  • Was established in 1972 as an all-volunteer organization to serve children in pre-school through 12th grade.
  • Serves over 20,000 of the most needy children in Alexandria, Arlington, Prince William, and Fairfax.
  • Distributes more than 60,000 books annually, at no cost to the children or their parents.
  • Can be found in schools, day care centers, Head Start programs, and shelters.
